What’s next for NARIX?

(Please note - we’re including a TL;DR at the bottom of this post for accessibility reasons. We’re also sharing the TL’DR in French.)

Hello all!

First, thank you to everyone who attended or volunteered at our June NARIX event in Montreal, and a big thank you to TensionMtl, Willcat, Masha, and Chris for hosting us in their beautiful space. We cannot express how good it felt to be back in community together, and how energizing it was to see this event happen again after the long hiatus. And really especially thank you all for the commitment to following our medical guidelines considering the ongoing pandemic; we are pleased to report that to the best of our knowledge nobody caught Covid at NARIX.

We appreciate your patience while we enjoyed our summers, wrapped up post-event details, and regrouped to plan for the next steps of this organization. Planning this event takes a ton of work, and collaboration from many people to make it happen. With that, we’ve got some announcements and upcoming dates to share with you all:

— STAFF UPDATE:

First, we’ve made some changes as an organization to our staff. After years of service, Kim (@MissLee) and Zach (@sweetzephyr) have stepped down from our steering committee, and we’ve added a new steering committee member, Nox (@Anoxia) to our volunteer leadership team. That means that today, the NARIX steering committee consists of:

  • Havoc (she/her) - located in Austin

  • Ivy (she/they) - located in the Bay Area

  • Nox (they/them) - located in Chicago

  • Tornus (he/him) - located in Seattle

This event takes a lot more than 4 people to put on, and we’re looking to evolve the organization to have long-term non-steering committee roles as well. There are three core reasons for this:

  • One, we know that people have different levels of interest in being involved:

    • Being able to contribute without having the commitment and responsibility of the steering committee roles will allow us to invite more people to participate, while avoiding burnout for everyone.

    • We also believe this change will provide transparency into what roles are available and how to contribute.

  • Two, we want to support people in developing expertise, and standardize how we train steering committee replacements:

    • A big challenge when putting on events like this is turnover and losing institutional knowledge each time folks leave. In the past, roles like volunteer coordinator and food lead were “per event” engagements, but we’d love to support folks in developing expertise in specific areas, and riding alongside the steering committee in a more ongoing way.

  • Three, we can’t do it alone, and we absolutely need the help!

— UPCOMING MEETING UPDATE:

With that, we’d like to make an open call for committed volunteers, who are interested in participating in a more ongoing way across multiple events:

On Sunday October 30, 2022, we’ll be hosting a digital planning meeting, via zoom, at 9:00am Pacific Time.

The agenda of this meeting will be to share our vision for the new roles that we’re hoping to add, a discussion of the future of the organization, and some tactical next steps and help we need to put on the next NARIX. We’ll still have “per event” opportunities to volunteer, so if you’re looking for an even lower effort way of contributing, stay tuned for those details later in the year. To rsvp to the zoom meeting, please shoot us an email at narix@narix.org, and we’ll respond with all the joining details.

— NEXT EVENT UPDATE:

Which brings us to the question that’s probably on everyone’s minds: when is the next one?

At this point, we’re hopeful that we can bring another in-person NARIX event to life in Spring of 2023. No, we don’t have a venue, or dates– these are some of the puzzle pieces we’re still shaking to the top of the pile. But as long as we can find a venue that can host us soon, we feel confident in being able to meet this timeline for our next event.

Which also makes this a good time to reiterate: if you run a venue, or know of a venue that is interested in hosting NARIX, please please please reach out! Venue remains consistently one of the most important and earliest pieces we need to make this event successful.

That’s all we have for now. The Discord continues to be open and we’ll be monitoring questions and comments both on this post and over there.

Wishing our whole NARIX community a lovely start of fall, and looking forward to continuing to connect with you all to keep bringing these events to North America!

Warm regards,

NARIX Steering Committee
